Synthetic Oil vs. Regular Oil

oil change on a car

At the Frank Brown GMC service center, we’re proud to offer a variety of auto services — from basic maintenance to more complex repairs. When it comes to basic maintenance, it doesn’t get much more basic than oil services. One of the questions we’re frequently asked is, “What’s the difference between synthetic oil vs. regular oil?” Our experts are here to explain the properties of different grades of oil used during oil changes. Read on to learn more about synthetic vs. regular oil.

What is Regular Oil?

Regular oil, or conventional oil, is a petroleum-based fluid that’s been used in combustion engines for over 150 years. Basically, it’s distilled crude oil that’s mined from underground reservoirs. Motor oil acts as a lubricant for the engine’s internal parts; it reduces engine wear and tear and prevents overheating.

What is Synthetic Oil?

Like regular oil, synthetic oil is also petroleum-based. However, it offers even greater lubrication for the engine’s internal moving parts. Additionally, it’s a more stable substance in the sense that it doesn’t oxide quite as easily as regular or conventional oil, and better retains its protective properties. Synthetic is developed from petrochemicals and is formulated to deliver specific properties that conventional oil doesn’t. Comparatively, synthetic oils are also:

  • Less viscous at lower temperatures
  • Adept at cleaning the engine, as well as lubricating
  • Better at protecting critical turbocharger parts (if you have a turbo engine)

Full Synthetic vs. Synthetic Blends: What’s the Difference?

As well as fully synthetic oil and conventional oil, synthetic blends are also available. As you might have guessed, synthetic blends are a combination of conventional and synthetic oil. Synthetic blends offer some of the enhanced properties of synthetic oil, while also offering the cost benefits of conventional oil.

It’s worth noting that some cars require full synthetic oil — and that could be your GMC SUV or truck. Double-check your owner’s manual for more information on what kind of oil you should be using. You’re also free to contact our service experts if you have any questions about synthetic oil vs. regular oil.
